Stock purchases January 2022

The new year has begun as the old year has ended. At the end of January, there were quite a few new additions and additional purchases. In total, shares worth around 22.652 EUR were bought into the portfolio. However, there were also sales.

Please note as disclaimer that this type of blog post is mostly a review. The discussed stocks have meanwhile mostly completely different prices.

So the following applies: no investment advice, do your own research, no liability!

Re-Buys

Oaktree Specialty Lending

At the end of January, after selling FS KKR, I reinvested the free funds in 200 additional shares of Oaktree Specialty Lending (OCSL) at 7,4973 USD per share into the Captrader* portfolio. Previously, I already had 400 shares in the portfolio. Including order fees, the additional purchase cost me ~1.501 USD or ~1.348 EUR.

Owl Rock Capital

The other free funds from the FS KKR sale were invested in Owl Rock Capital (ORCC). 100 fresh shares at 14,485 USD per share were bought into the Captrader* portfolio. That was a total of ~1.450 USD or ~1.302 EUR incl. order fees.

Franchise Group

And so it continued. My 30 shares of Franchise Group (FRG) got company of another 70 shares at 47,40 USD per share, which now provide cash flow in the Captrader* portfolio. Including order fees, the additional purchase cost me ~3.320 USD or ~2.978 EUR.

After the price has returned to the cost price, I was virtually forced to add. There are now 100 FRG shares in the portfolio! The dividend yield in relation to the purchase price is 5,28%. So a real high dividend value. For 2022, I expected further large dividend increases, although no longer at the level of last year.

B. Riley Financial

Another additional purchase was 40 shares of B. Riley Financial (RILY) at 60,91 USD per share in the Captrader* portfolio. Including order fees, the additional purchase cost me ~2.439 USD or ~2.188 EUR.

There are now 60 RILY shares in the portfolio! The dividend yield in relation to purchase price is now around 6,5%. If you add the special dividends, we would be at over 20%.

Safehold

Safehold (SAFE) was also added to the Captrader* portfolio. 40 additional shares at 60,50 USD per share now join the 30 existing shares. Including order fees, the additional purchase cost me ~2.422 USD or ~2.115 EUR.

Shopify, Coinbase, Upstart & Block

Venture positions took a brutal beating at the end of January and many investors fled directly into value stocks. I like value, but so does countercyclical investing. That's why I also added to my existing positions in Shopify (SHOP), Coinbase (COIN), Upstart (UPST), and Block (SQ) (formerly Square).

The following applies to my venture positions in the portfolio:

  • Speculative Investments
  • Maximum 10% weighting
  • Maximum half position size (approx. 2,5k)
  • Setting stops is mandatory!
  • Early profit taking
  • Ideally no capital loss

First-time purchases

Netsreit

With Netstreit, another REIT has been added to the Captrader* portfolio. Here I had bought 100 shares at 23,346 USD per share.

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services

I also made a find in the shipping sector and bought 50 shares of ZIM Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) at 58,33 USD per share in the Captrader* portfolio. I had the stock on my watchlist for quite some time. Cyclical business, but due to supply chain issues with strong cash flow and a nice dividend.

Viacom CBS

The next company I bought into the portfolio was Viacom CBS (VIAC, now PARA = Paramount Global). A total of 100 shares at 32,855 USD per share were added to the Captrader* portfolio, which cost me ~3.288 USD or ~2.914 EUR including order fees. Here, the streaming sector, which is growing strongly, is particularly interesting for me.

Global X Nasdaq 100 Covered Call ETF

In addition, I was able to buy a high-distribution ETF via options. I am talking about the Global X Nasdaq 100 Covered Call ETF (QYLD), which distributes monthly and, as the name suggests, writes covered calls on the Nasdaq 100 shares held for additional cash flow. As far as I know, such an ETF is not tradable via German brokers and also at Captrader* it is only possible via options.

Sales

FS KKR

FS KKR (FSK) was already under observation. The dividend has now been slightly reduced and the new advisory fee agreement is also rather to the disadvantage of shareholders. Therefore, the company had to leave my portfolio and was replaced as described above by additional purchases of ORCC and OCSL.

Rational, Hypoport, Nexi, Vulcan Energy, Lukoil & Klöckner

10% of my portfolio is reserved for so-called venture positions. These are more speculative investments with a
short- to medium-term investment case. Corrections and crashes are sometimes fatal here. So the goal was capital preservation and ideally some upside. I did not succeed with Nexi (I may get back in later). Russian stocks had a rather uncool momentum (in retrospect lucky).

My broker(s)

I have several brokers for my stocks, but the majority are German ones, so European readers of my blog cannot register there. As you may know I'm very transparent about the income I receive if you use one of my * affiliate or referral links. Most of the time there is a bonus for you, but never ever costs!

At Captrader, a German reseller of Interactive Brokers, I maintain my largest securities account. Here I can buy shares directly on the NYSE from as little as 1 US cent or at least 2 USD. German shares are also tradable from as little as 2€. Types of securities not tradable through other brokers, such as close-end funds, are also available there. I also do my options trading there.

If you register via my link*, you can also test Captrader quite easily with a demo account and play money. I receive for a demo account 20€ and another 50€, provided that an active account is set up and it was traded for 20€/USD.

Degiro is my second largest broker. A while ago they did a fusion with the German broker flatex, and it's now the biggest broker in Europe. You can trade already from 0,50€ directly on the NYSE or other US stock exchanges. Also, I trade European options there.

If you use my link* and register an account on Degiro you get a refund of 20€ transaction credit. You only need to spend 20€ transaction credit within 3 months. If you do so, and only then, I have also the possibility to get a refund.

I've been with the German broker Trade Republic for a year now and they expand to Italy in the Netherlands! My savings plans for individual shares and ETFs have been running there for a short time. Free of charge! Otherwise, the trade is also quite cheap with 1 € fee for buying or selling securities.

If you use my Trade Republic link* I receive up to 45€.
